In the first year of the American War of Independence General Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River. The most famous crossing occurred the night of December 25 when they crossed and launched a surprise attack on a Garrison of Hessian soldiers in Trenton, New Jersey. The extreme weather conditions and logistical difficulties involved in the crossing and the muddy march with artillery to Trenton are shining examples of the grit, determination, courage and daring of our American ancestors.
Last year I wrote at length about the many great qualities of George Washington. You can read it here. This year I will be brief. It is best to leave more time to meditate upon the qualities of our ancestors. Doing so fills me with gratitude and makes me value and cherish what they have bequeathed to us. I know we are up to the sacrifices and challenges that lay ahead.
Happy Birthday George Washington. May the sweet ales flow from the cups of you and your men in the Great Halls above us today. Have a wonderful holiday everyone.
